Breaking down costs in Azure with tags
Using the Azure portal, you can filter your costs by a tag using the cost management tool.
One key thing to note here is that these costs are based on the historic record of the tag you select (The tags that a resource had applied at the time of invoice).
What If you wanted to get a breakdown of costs by tags that are currently applied to resources? This is not available in Azure. CloudClaritys’ environment summary tool provides you with a live summary view and allows you to slice costs (using tags) however you wish.
It is easy to get started, simply head over to the Azure marketplace and search for “CloudClarity”, start a free trial, and once your account is setup, follow these steps to start understanding your costs:
1. Navigate to Dashboard.
2. Select a scope, this can be a management group, subscription, or resource group.
3. Add tag filters to limit the resources you are looking at. For example, using the ‘owner’ tag you can filter resources to only see costs you are the owner of.
4. Now look at your environment summary
5. To break-down this cost even further, I will start adding comparison groups.
I can see the group on the right is the total cost of all the resources that I own, these resources also have “application”: “Tag Manager” applied. And I can also see that the two bars are equal, therefore all my resources have “application”: “Tag Manager” applied. You can add as many comparison groups as you would like.
